Neal's Yard is a little street near Covent garden tube, just a short walk from Trafalgar square. This small area has quite a lot of organic offerings: Walking into the courtyard of Neal's Yard is like stepping into another time, finally escaping the incessant noise of London traffic, to a peaceful calm of colorfully painted walls with vines and window boxes blossoming with color.
When I arrived, I had unfortunately already lunched but popped in Neal's Yard Salad Bar in search of vegan organic baked goods: they do use organic ingredients, but not 100%. I picked up chocolate and coconut muffins, each dense, moist and full of flavor.
The menu and environment radiated with a healthful glow as a server walked past with a glass cup swimming with mint leaves and people sat outside under heat lamps with bowls of steaming soup. I regretted having chosen the nearby non-organic but vegan £5 chinese/thai buffet at Chi. Live and learn.
Neal's Yard Remedies is a pretty shop, stocking a wide range of organic beauty products, skin care, herbs, and therapies. I picked up a £5 stick of organic lip balm which is quite nice.
Unfortunately Neal's Yard Bakery is no longer there. It's fully organic and their breads can be purchased at these locations.
Holland & Barrett, the UK's largest healthfood retailer is just around the corner on Shorts Gardens. There, I stocked up on organic snacks and bars, including flapjacks.
If coffee is your poison, just around the corner on Monmouth St. is the Monmouth Coffee Company featuring several choices of organic coffee and their own organic espresso blend.
And after walking around London all week I was very tempted to pop in the massage shop for a £10 10 minute back massage.
I'll be back again with an appetite!
